Senator CHILDS —Is the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs aware of reports that the Soviet Union is to follow the example set by the United States of America by deploying land and sea based missiles similar to the cruise missiles now being deployed by the United States Air Force and Navy? Will the Government convey to both super-powers Australia's concern at this further escalation of the arms race, especially in view of the Ambassador for Disarmament's support at the United Nations for Mr Chernenko's latest arms proposal which calls for a mutual arms freeze, an underground test ban as well as a ban on nuclear weapons in outer space and a renunciation by the United States of first use of nuclear weapons?

Senator GARETH EVANS —There is no doubt that all sorts of useful things can be said in answer to Senator Child's question. However, I will defer doing so until I have had a word with the Minister about it.
