(Question No. 939)

Senator Hamer asked the Minister representing the Minister for Transport, upon notice, on 6 June 1984:

(1) What is the dead weight tonnage of each of the two new ships which have been approved for the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. as announced by the Secretary of the Department of Transport on 1 June 1984.

(2) What is the approved manning level for each of the two ships.

(3) What are the designations and duties of the crew for each ship.

(4) What is the estimated cost per annum of the crew for each ship in terms of salaries, benefits, holiday bonuses and related costs for each ship.

(5) What is the number of days per annum of furlough for each crew member for each ship.

(6) What is the estimated cost to revenue of the tax concessions for each ship.

(7) What is the difference in the annual operating costs of each of these ships and an identical ship operating under the Swedish flag and one operating under the British flag.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Transport has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) One ship will be about 147,000 dwt and the other approximately 230,000 dwt.

(2), (3) and (6) The Australian Taxation Office has advised that information concerning eligibility of individual shipowners for the concessions is covered by the secrecy provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Act.

(4), (5) and (7) The information sought relates to the commercial operations of BHP and should be sought from the Company.
