Senator MACKLIN —by leave-An amendment by the Australian Democrats to the motion moved by the Attorney-General (Senator Gareth Evans) has been circulated by me. I move:

At end of motion, add:

'(2) That the papers referred to in sub-paragraphs (a) (i) and (ii) be produced to the Director of Public Prosecutions following the appointment of the Commissioners Assisting the Select Committee on Allegations Concerning a Judge and on the day next succeeding the day on which that Committee first meets'.

If this amendment is carried, the Government's original suggestion of sending this matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Opposition's original intention of sending it to a committee of the Senate, which would have attached to it certain commissioners assisting it, would occur at the same time. The wording 'on the day next succeeding the day on which that Committee first meets' , is necessary from the point of view of the hours of meeting. Hence, it is not possible to frame a motion requiring the two proposals to commence on the same day without taking away the right of the committee to meet at a time and place of its choosing. If this amendment is carried we believe that it will bring together both proposals. Both inquiries will start at the same time. I think that probably would be the maximum possible consensus able to be achieved by this chamber on this issue.
