Senator CHIPP (Leader of the Australian Democrats) —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes that:

(i) energy security is crucial to the well-being of nations and the avoidance of international conflict,

(ii) nuclear power cannot provide energy security given that it cannot physically replace 90 per cent of the world's oil consumption which is used by the transport and chemical industries,

(iii) the excessive cost of nuclear power makes it totally uneconomical in any application, and

(b) agrees with a principal finding of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry that the nuclear power industry is unintentionally contributing to an increased risk of nuclear war; and

(c) calls on the Government to develop and promote renewable energy resources and an efficient technologies industry which would create many valuable jobs in Australia; make appropriate energy resources available to satisfy legitimate demands for energy security; and result in minimal environmental impact and drastically reduce risk of nuclear proliferation.
