To the Honorable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives
This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House:
the discriminating effects of the Northern Territory Emergency Response. As it is currently configured and being carried out, the Emergency Response is incompatible with Australia’s obligations under
- The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and
- The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
treaties to which Australia is a party, as well as incompatible with
- The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
to which Australia has affirmed its support.
We therefore ask the House to:
- Reinstate urgently the protections of the Racial Discrimination Act in regard to the Indigenous people of the Northern Territory and
- Consult widely with them about effective measures which respect the rights of Indigenous people and are free of racial discrimination.
by Mrs Irwin (from 176 citizens)
