In respect of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and the Arts funded:

(a)   National Portrait Gallery,

(b)   Australian National Maritime Museum,

(c)   National Gallery of Australia,

(d)   National Museum of Australia,

(e)   Bundanon Trust,

(f)   National Film and Sound Archive, and

(g)   Artbank:

(i)  

   how many staff are employed at each institution;

(ii)  

   during the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 financial years, what amount of funding has been allocated for salaries and wages of staff at each institution; and

(iii)  

   since his appointment as the Minister, has he visited the offices or auxiliary facilities of any of these institutions, if so, which ones and when.

(a)   National Portrait Gallery

(i)  

   As at 26 February 2009, 57 staff were employed (includes part time, non-ongoing and casual staff).

(ii)

   The Minister visited the National Portrait Gallery on:

• 18 April 2008 (when it operated from Old Parliament House)
• 22 May 2008 (construction site visit)
• 9 October 2008

Note: The Minister also attended a DFAT function held at the National Portrait Gallery on 9 February 2009.

(b)   Australian National Maritime Museum

(i)  

   The Australian National Maritime Museum employed 121 staff as at 26 February 2009, including all full and part time, ongoing and non-ongoing staff whether ‘active’ or on approved leave.

(ii)

   The Minister has visited the Museum on three occasions:

• 21 May 2008
• 13 December 2008, and
• 15 January 2009.

(c)   National Gallery of Australia

(i)  

   National Gallery of Australia employs 258 people.

   The Minister has visited the Gallery on four occasions for the following official functions:

• The opening of Australian Surrealism on 27 February 2008
• The 2020 Summit Dinner on 19 April 2008
• Senators’ and MPs’ viewing of Turner to Monet on 4 June 2008, and
• Senators’ and MPs’ viewing of Degas on 4 February 2009.

The Gallery is aware the Minister has also attended Gallery premises for other functions unrelated to Gallery business.

(d)   National Museum of Australia

(i)  

   The National Museum of Australia employs 285 people.

(ii)

   The Minister has visited the Museum on three occasions:

• 21 August 2008 to open the Emily Kame Kngwarreye exhibition
• 1 December 2008 to open the Behind the Lines Cartoon exhibition, and
• 29 January 2009 to open the redeveloped Australian Journeys gallery.

(e)   Bundanon Trust

(i)  

   The Bundanon Trust employs a full time equivalent of 18.24 people.

(ii)

   The Minister visited the Bundanon Trust on 13 February 2009.

(f)   National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA)

(i)  

   As at 27 February 2009, the NFSA employed 217 staff.

   The Minister visited the NFSA’s headquarters in Canberra on 20 February 2008 and 18 June 2008 and the NFSA’s Sydney office on 30 October 2008.

(g)   Artbank
