To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives assembled in Parliament.

The Building and Construction Industry Improvement Act 2005 (Cth), and Office of the Building and Construction Commissioner, represent an attack on the human rights of workers in the building and construction industry. Building and construction workers are subjected to a special set of unfair, discriminatory, and draconian laws to which no other Australian is subjected.

The laws remove the right to silence, curtail the right of workers to take action over unsafe work sites, violate obligations under international conventions to which Australia is a signatory, and introduce enormous fines and uncapped damages against ordinary workers.

Your petitioners respectfully request:

  • The immediate repeal of the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Act 2005 (Cth); and
  • The immediate abolition of the Office of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner.
