Mr Hawke asked the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, in writing, on 24 June 2008:

(1)   Is he aware that there is no heavy or light rail line to the North West of Sydney.

(2)   Is he aware that the New South Wales State Government has re-announced the development of the North West Rail line five times since 1998.

(3)   When did he first become aware of the New South Wales State Government’s plan to build a Western Metro line.

(4)   Why did the Government provide funding for a feasibility study for the Western Metro line, but not for the North West Metro line, and what consultation did he undertake in deciding: (a) to fund a feasibility study for the Western Metro line; and (b) not to fund a feasibility study for the North West Metro line.

(5)   Is the North West Metro line eligible for funding under the Infrastructure Australia fund; if so, is there an intention to fund it.

Mr Albanese (Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

I am aware that the Howard Government provided no funding for public transport in Sydney including the Northwest of Sydney from 1996 to 2007.
