Mr ANDREWS (Minister for Immigration and Citizenship) (6:59 PM) —I can explain to the honourable member the government’s policy. It is one of integration. The great achievement of Australia, particularly in the last six decades since the end of the Second World War, has been our ability, under governments of both political persuasions, to balance two factors: integration and diversity. That balance is not a scientific outcome; it is a matter of making judgements and monetary policies and trying to achieve as best one can, from time to time in differing circumstances, the way as to how we achieve that balance. But that is the government’s approach.
