Mr Kelvin Thomson asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 7 December 2006:

When was the action of the US Senators who wrote to then Secretary of State, Colin Powell, in November 2003 expressing grave concerns about reports that AWB had been paid inflated prices for wheat by the Iraqi regime brought to his attention, and what investigations did he undertake into the US Senators’ grave concerns.

Mr Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

US Senator Pat Roberts issued a media release on 5 November 2003 regarding the letter to the Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and Secretary of Agriculture, Ann Veneman, signed by a bipartisan group of US Senators. This is a matter of public record. The Government established the Inquiry into Certain Australian Companies in Relation to the UN Oil-for-Food Programme to investigate allegations AWB paid funds to the Saddam Hussein regime. I refer the member to Chapter 28 of the Cole Inquiry Report, which covers these matters.
