Mr Kerr asked the Treasurer, in writing, on 14 August 2006:

(1)   Is he aware that at least some of the information booklets accompanying the 2006 Census contained questions which did not match the Census form.

(2)   Can he state whether all of the booklets were incorrect or only some; if the latter, how many.

(3)   Will these errors result in incorrect data being collected; if so, how will this be remedied to ensure that accurate information is eventually compiled.

(4)   Will additional human and financial resources be provided because of the additional work this will require.

Mr Costello (Treasurer) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

(1)   to (4) There are two main information booklets accompanying the 2006 Census forms. One is entitled the Household Guide (blue coloured cover) which was delivered with Household Forms. The other is entitled the Personal Guide (orange coloured folder) and was delivered with Personal Forms. The Australian Statistician has advised that some Personal Guides were delivered with Household Forms, which may have given rise to a perception that some information in the booklet did not match the form. The Australian Statistician further advises that no booklets are known to be incorrect, this should not result in any incorrect information being collected and that no additional work will be required.
