Mr Martin Ferguson asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 8 August 2006:

Is he aware that journalist Nguyen Vu Binh (a) suffers continued imprisonment in Vietnam, (b) is an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience and (c) had previously assailed a border agreement with China and attempted to establish an Anti-Corruption Association; if so, have Australian authorities made any submissions to Vietnamese authorities around issues of adequate food and medical care; if not, given Vietnam’s adherence to relevant International Conventions, will Australia’s concerns regarding this situation be raised.

Mr Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

In response to points (a) to (c), yes.

We make regular representations to the Vietnamese Government concerning the conditions of Mr Binh’s detention and urging his release.
