Mr Bowen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Trade, in writing, on 10 May 2005:

(1)   What sum was spent on recruitment agencies in (a) 2001, (b) 2002, (c) 2003, and (d) 2004 by each department and agency in the Minister’s portfolio.

(2)   Will the Minister provide a list of the recruitment agencies which are used by the department and agencies in the Minister’s portfolio.

Mr Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs) —On behalf of the Minister for Trade and me, the answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

DFAT

(1)   The department uses recruitment agencies to provide administrative support to DFAT selection processes. Costs based on financial year expenditure are as follows: 2001/02 - $69,267.33 2002/03 - $119,530.60 2003/04 - $134,114.24 2004/05 - $136,165.81 This does not include the fees paid to recruitment agencies for the provision of non-ongoing (temporary) staff and contractors as compiling these figures would involve an unreasonable diversion of resources.
