Mr Murphy asked the Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, in writing, on 18 August 2005:

Further to the answer to question No. 1488, what are the reasons given by the 844 barristers, 6,804 solicitors and 74 members of the judiciary who have not lodged their taxation return for the financial year ended 30 June 2004.

Mr Brough (Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

All of the members of the legal profession identified in question no. 1488 have not been individually contacted. Of the members who have been contacted the reasons cited for failing to lodge include:

  • business pressures
  • disorganisation
  • marital/family problems
  • ill health
  • assumed no requirement to lodge
  • tax agent failure to assist with lodging on time
