Mr Melham asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 17 August 2005:

(1)   Is Singapore the only country in South-East Asia which is not a Member of UNESCO.

(2)   When and where did Australia and Singapore last hold discussions on Singapore becoming a Member of UNESCO.


Mr Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   There is no recent record of formal communications between Australia and Singapore, concerning Singapore becoming a Member of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
