(1)   In respect of the claims in his press release dated 20 June 2005 that “many employers in Australia today are registered training organisations and provide on the job training” and that 25 per cent of people who completed a New Apprenticeship did not receive any training at TAFE or a similar institution or from an external trainer who came into the workplace, what are the 50 companies in 2004 (excluding Group Training Organisations) which employed the most New Apprentices and, as Registered Training Organisations, provided on-the-job training in the manner he described.

(2)   For each company identified in part (1), how many of its New Apprentices in training during 2004 were (a) in each of the ASCO occupation groups and (b) at each AQF Certificate Level.

The following table shows the fifty largest employers commencing New Apprentices in the 2004 calendar year, where the employer delivered some or all of the training as an enterprise based Registered Training Organisation. Where a single organisation has more than one employer record within the list (for example, Hungry Jacks, Coles Myer, Woolworths Ltd), these records have been consolidated. However, this data will not necessarily represent the full New Apprenticeships training effort of these organisations.

Notes: all data is extracted from the Department of Education, Science and Training’s Training and Youth Internet Management System database as at 24 June 2005. The database does not hold in-training numbers, so commencements for the 2004 calendar year has been provided. The database only holds information on training providers for 94% of the 253,723 New Apprenticeships commencements recorded thus far in the 2004 calendar year. The database currently holds no information on the Australian Standard Classification of Occupation groupings of New Apprentices by employer as requested. In addition, the database holds no comprehensive information about whether the training was delivered “on-the-job”. For example it is possible for an employer to deliver enterprise based training in an “off-the-job” environment.
