Mr Rudd asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 23 June 2005:

Does he support Permanent Seats on the UN Security Council for (a) Japan, (b) Brazil, (c) Germany, (d) Indonesia, and (e) India.

Mr Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

I have mentioned Japan, Brazil, India and Indonesia as potential new permanent members of an expanded Security Council. Australia’s position on specific proposals for Security Council expansion will depend on the final text of UN resolutions on this issue and on which candidates nominate for membership.
