Mr Laurie Ferguson asked the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, in writing, on 9 March 2005:

(1)   Is the Minister aware that Mr Woo Jin Park, who formally worked at Unit 12, 5 Bayview Avenue, The Entrance, NSW, fled when confronted by Immigration officers.

(2)   Is the Minister aware that Mr Park was deported as an illegal overstayer and used a fake company to subcontract his services to the Di Lorenzo Company of Sydney.

(3)   Can the Minister advise of the circumstances surrounding this case.

(4)   Is the Minister aware that Mr Jin Park has returned to Australia on a false passport under a different name and has been seen by former co-workers.

Mr McGauran (Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) —The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable member’s question:

(1)   Departmental records indicate that Mr Park did not attempt to flee Immigration officers.

(2)   Mr Park was removed from Australia on 15 December 2002. He is believed to have been a Director of two tiling companies in Australia. These two companies were registered with ASIC in 1996 and 2000 respectively and were deregistered after strike off action in 2001 and 2004 respectively. Records indicate a possible link with Di Lorenzo but my Department can not confirm this.

(3)   Mr Park was brought to the attention of my Department in April 2002 through community information alleging that he was engaging illegal workers. He was subsequently identified as an unlawful non-citizen and removed.

(4)   Mr Park returned to Australia as the holder of a sponsored spouse visa in December 2004. The case is being investigated. In May 2003 my Department received information alleging that Mr Park had returned to Sydney. Checks of departmental records and databases do not confirm this. The Department could find no evidence that he had entered with another passport.
