Mr Bowen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 26 May 2005:

(1)   What sum was spent on the AusAID project for the construction of the 200 houses, 6 minor irrigation projects and 30 agro-wells in Sri Lanka?

(2)   Which company or companies carried out this work on behalf of AusAID and what is its postal address?

(3)   Which other firms tendered for this work and what are their postal addresses?


Mr Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

(1)   $680,688.

(2)   The NGOs that carried out the work and their postal addresses are: Sewa Lanka Foundation Post Box No. 3 Boralesgamuwa, Sri Lanka

(3)   Formal tenders were not sought. This work was completed by NGOs under the Australia Community Rehabilitation Program.
