Mr McClelland asked the Minister representing the Minister for Justice and Customs, in writing, on 7 March 2005:

What capacity does the Australian Customs Service have to test containers for radiological material.

Mr Ruddock (Attorney-General) —The Minister for Justice and Customs has provided the following answer to the honourable member’s question:

Customs operates radiation detection and identification instruments at a wide number of locations nationwide, including all Container Examination Facilities. The detectors are highly sensitive devices, capable of detecting very small differences in background radiation. The identifiers are also extremely sensitive, and are able to identify sources of radiation so Customs can take appropriate action in response.
