Mr McClelland asked the Minister representing the Minister for Justice and Customs, in writing, on 8 February 2005:

What measures has the Australian Customs Service taken in response to each of the 9 recommendations made by the Auditor-General in the Auditor-General’s Audit Report No. 37 of 2003-2004 on the National Marine Unit.

Mr Ruddock (Attorney-General) —The Minister for Justice and Customs has provided the following answer to the honourable member’s question:

In 2003-2004, the Auditor-General examined the National Marine Unit’s (NMU) surveillance and response operations with particular emphasis on strategic and tactical taskings, crew operations, crew training, asset management and governance arrangements.

In Audit Report No. 37, the Auditor-General concluded that, overall, the NMU’s surveillance and response operations were administratively effective. However, the Auditor-General considered the NMU’s administration could be more effective if its systems and processes were better integrated and automated. The report made nine recommendations which Customs agreed with. Recommendations 3,6,8 and 9 are complete. Recommendations 1,2,4, 5 and 7 are well advanced.
