Mr Martin Ferguson asked the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, in writing, on 8 February 2005:

In respect of Australian Government conditions on the sale of uranium to other countries,

(a)   which countries are signatory to the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty,

(b)   with which countries does Australia have bilateral agreements on nuclear safeguards,

(c)   with which countries is Australia currently negotiating a bilateral agreement on nuclear safeguards, and

(d)   for each of the last ten financial years, to which countries has Australia sold uranium oxide

(a)   There are 91 countries that have signed the Treaty on The Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. These are:

US covering supply to Taiwan, China

NB: Euratom’s Safeguards Office is responsible for the application of safeguards to all nuclear material in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden; and to all nuclear material in civil facilities in France and the U.K. Source: Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office

(c)   There are no new bilateral safeguards agreements being negotiated at this time.
