To the Honourable Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives assembled in Parliament:
This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House:
1. That low and middle income Australians will be much worse off under the changes to Medicare announced by the Prime Minister on April 28, 2003.
2. That the majority of Australians are opposed to a privatized American style health care system.
3. That the fundamental principle underlying Medicare is that health services should be available according to medical need, not a patient's capacity to pay. Medicare is a system of health care for everyone, not a welfare system for some while everyone else pays their own way.
4. That public hospitals will be under greater pressure because Australians will find it more difficult to consult a bulk billing General Practitioner.
We therefore seek that the House takes urgent steps to repair public health care and restore Universal Bulk Billing to ensure that all Australians have access to the health care they need.
