Mr JULL (1:54 PM) —I would like to place on the record my personal congratulations—and, I believe, the congratulations of virtually every member of this House—on the tremendous achievement of Matthew Hayden at the Perth cricket ground last Friday in achieving his world record innings of 380 runs. Those of us from Queensland who have followed the career of Matthew Hayden over more than a decade, from those early times when he first appeared in the Queensland Sheffield Shield team, knew that he was a man who was going to go places. We all believed in him and we believed that he showed great dedication and great spirit whenever he went out to bat for Queensland. We were all delighted at his early selection in the test team. I think we were all horrified that he was dropped from that test team, and we felt very much for him during those years that he was in the wilderness. But he did not give up and he worked particularly hard. I will never forget some of the scenes at the Brisbane Cricket Ground towards the end of that period, when there were signs everywhere reading `Matt the Bat' and `Give Matt a bat'. Eventually the selectors relented—and the rest is history. That 380 was a fine innings from a fine sportsman, a dedicated young man, probably showing more dedication to his game than almost any other athlete in Australia's history. I hope that he and his family enjoy the record that he has achieved but that this is just the start of many more great innings to come. He is a boy from Kingaroy, like my good self and the member for Groom, and I hope he will never give up. (Time expired)
