Mr RANDALL (1:49 PM) —Along with other members of this House, I too wish to register the fact that I am appalled by the ABC's announcement that it will cut funding for Behind the News, a program for schoolchildren around Australia. I am appalled for a number of reasons. I am a former schoolteacher and my wife is a schoolteacher, and we find this an extremely valuable educational program for children which has been running for many years. Unlike other members, I wish to say that the priorities of the ABC in this case need to be examined given that they take expensive overseas trips, have chauffeur driven cars and buy expensive overseas programs and films. I think they have their priorities wrong—for example, Indira Naidoo's short program is very expensive. Their priority should be about the education of children throughout schools in Australia. BTN is a very informative tool and much appreciated by not only students but also teachers and parents. I encourage the ABC not to cut BTN but to fund BTN because it is one of the most sought after programs in schools. On behalf of the children of Australia, I urge them to get their priorities right.
