Dr NELSON (Minister for Education, Science and Training) (3:40 PM) —Mr Speaker, I wish to make a personal explanation.


The SPEAKER —Does the Minister for Education, Science and Training claim to have been misrepresented?


Dr NELSON —Yes.


The SPEAKER —The minister may proceed.


Dr NELSON —In the Daily Telegraph on 16 August, Michael Duffy wrote in reference to a report on higher education:

But what did the Education Minister Brendan Nelson do? Simply cut the unpleasant news from the relevant report.

The Secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training in his letter of 8 August 2003, which I tabled on 11 August, said:

I would stress that the Department had already taken the decision to remove all material relating to unpublished internal Departmental analysis before that draft was provided to your Higher Education Adviser.
