Ms Hoare asked the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, upon notice, on 2 December 2002:

(1) Does the Government plan to merge her Department with Centrelink.

(2) Is she aware of the unique status of veterans.

(3) What is the future of the Gold Card.

Mrs Vale (Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) No. There are no plans to merge the Department of Veterans' Affairs with Centrelink.

(2) Yes. I, with the Government remain committed to those who have served and currently serve in the defence of Australia. The unique status of veterans is recognised and preserved by the work of the Repatriation Commission, which, through the Department of Veterans' Affairs, serves members of Australia's veterans and defence force communities, their war widows/widowers and dependants through programs of care, compensation, commemoration and defence support services.

(3) The Government is committed to the future of the Gold Card and has no plans to reduce its status in the Australian community. The Gold Card is issued to Australian veterans, war widows/widowers and dependants, who under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986 are entitled to the full range of health care services funded by the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
