Dr Lawrence asked the Minister representing the Minister for the Arts and Sport, upon notice, on 16 October 2002:

Has the Government made a firm commitment to provide funding to ensure the proposed purpose-built building for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will go ahead; if not, why not and when will it be forthcoming.

Mr McGauran (Minister for Science) —The Minister for the Arts and Sport has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

The Government has not made any commitment to provide funding for the new accommodation which has been proposed by the Western Australian Government for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra at the Perth Concert Hall site.

While the Commonwealth Government funds national cultural institutions, such as the National Gallery of Australia and the National Library of Australia, capital funding for local and regional institutions is primarily the responsibility of the relevant State or local government. Any request for Commonwealth funding therefore needs to be considered in the broader context of the Budget. It was not possible to offer funding for the proposed new accommodation in the context of the 2002-03 Budget.
