Mr DUTTON (1:57 PM) —Today I take this opportunity to thank the schools within my electorate of Dickson for their continued support over the last 12 months. I have undertaken since being elected in November 2001 to visit as many of the 30-odd schools within my electorate as possible to gain an understanding of the challenges that they face, predominantly from a lack of funding from the state governments, particularly in relation to infrastructure and repainting and refurbishment of the schools.

I have written to, and with the assistance of Education Queensland contacted a number of, the principals from schools within my electorate to follow up on an initiative announced by Minister Brendan Nelson. That is an initiative whereby state primary schools will raise the flag of a morning and sing the National Anthem. I think it is a most worthy program and certainly worthy of support of all members not only on this side of the House but also on the other side. I think it is important for those young primary school students in particular to recognise the efforts of those diggers and veterans who have fought for this country to make it free and to make the society that we enjoy today. If we can promote that cause, only good can come from it. I also take this opportunity to say thank you and merry Christmas to all those schools. (Time expired)
