Mr Tanner asked the Minister representing the Minister for Forestry and Conservation, upon notice, on 11 March 2002:

(1) How many additional jobs have been created in the timber industry in East Gippsland since the introduction of the Regional Forest Agreement.

(2) Where are the jobs situated and what kind of work do they involve.


Mr Truss (Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) —The Minister for Forestry and Conservation has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

(1) Details on how many jobs have been created in the timber industry in East Gippsland since the introduction of the Regional Forest Agreement will not be available until the 2001 Census data is released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The relevant data is scheduled for release in November 2002.

The Victorian Forest Industry Structural Adjustment Package is still active in providing industry development assistance to promote an efficient and internationally competitive industry thereby creating jobs, especially in rural areas.
