Mr Kelvin Thomson asked the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, upon notice, on 14 March 2002:

Did the Greenhouse Allies Grant Arrangements for 1999-2000 include (a) $30,000 to the Australian Industry Group, (b) $30,000 to the South Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation and (c) $6205 for the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry; if so, how was this money spent and what greenhouse gas abatement was achieved as a result.

Dr Kemp (Minister for the Environment and Heritage) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

Yes, the Greenhouse Allies Grant Arrangements for 1999-2000, included payments of $30,000 to the Australian Industry Group, $30,000 to the South Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation and $6205 for the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Under the terms of their individual grants, these organisations promoted the benefits of greenhouse gas abatement and acted as `Partners' in mentoring and assisting groups of small enterprises, known as `Allies', to develop and implement cost effective energy efficiency and waste minimisation practices.

The Australian Industry Group directly assisted 11 organisations to implement cost effective environmental best practice measures that achieved greenhouse gas abatement of 13,264 tonnes.

The South Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation program focused on raising awareness, developing an `Australian Wine Environment Strategy' and linking greenhouse gas emission to other significant environmental issues impacting upon the wine industry. It is not possible to quantify savings at this time as abatement for the participating enterprises will not be realised and reported until after the 2002 Vintage.

The Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry Program provided assistance through energy audits, development of action plans and education to 30 small to medium sized enterprises within the service and manufacturing sectors. The program delivered abatement of 258 tonnes that equates to a percentage greenhouse gas reduction of between 7-14 % for the participating enterprises.
