Ms Vamvakinou asked the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 12 March 2002:

On the most recent data, what is the incidence of reported crime by type in (a) Victoria and (b) the postcode areas of (i) 3036, (ii) 3037, (iii) 3038, (iv) 3043, (v) 3046 (vi) 3047, (vii) 3048, (viii) 3049, (ix) 3059, (x) 3060, (xi) 3061, (xii) 3064, (xiii) 3427 and (xiv) 3428.


Mr Williams (Attorney-General) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(a) I am advised that according to the most recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of victims by offence category, for offences recorded by Police, in Victoria for 2000 was as follows:

Homicide and related offences - 169 victims. These can be broken down as follows:

(i) Murder - 55.

(ii) Attempted Murder - 51.

(iii) Manslaughter - 12.

(iv) Driving causing death - 51.

Assault - 16,541 victims.

Sexual assault - 2,474 victims.

Kidnapping - 106 victims.

Robbery - 3,326 victims. This can be broken down as follows:

(i) Armed robbery - 1,785.

(ii) Unarmed robbery - 1,541.

Blackmail/extortion - 69 victims.

Unlawful Entry with Intent - 78,774 victims. These can be broken down as follows:

(i) Property Theft - 62,654.

(ii) Other - 16,120.

Motor vehicle theft - 36,591 victims.

Other theft - 141,219 victims.

(b) I am advised that the Australian Bureau of Statistics does not produce data on the incidence of recorded crime by local area in Victoria, including by postcode. However, I am advised that such information may be available from the Victorian Police.
