Mr HAASE (9:49 AM) (9.49 a.m.)I rise today to bring the House's attention to the Parliamentary Education Office. During the last five weeks I have spent a great deal of time with an excellent team working through the Kimberley area of Western Australia, which is part of my Kalgoorlie electorate. I spent approximately a fortnight with them on the road. We visited a large number of schools—something like 11 schools—in the two weeks.

We went to Saint Joseph's in Kununurra. We went to Kalumburu Remote Community School, where the principal is Russell O'Neill. We went to Oombulgurri Remote Community School and caught up with Lincoln Day and his staff there who are unfortunately suffering a dreadful situation because their pre-primary school had been burned down two days before our arrival, which was a tragic situation. But they are rallying around there in magnificent style and getting good quality teaching back on the road.

We went to the Wyndham District High School, where the principal is Bob Steer. We went to Ngalangangpum School in Warman, where the principal, Sister Margaret Keane, is doing an excellent job providing high quality education to a great bunch of children who are attending regularly and learning well. The quality and presentation of the school was absolutely excellent. I had the privilege of talking to members of the Purnululu Remote Community School in Warmun also, although I did not, on that occasion, visit their community.

Down to Halls Creek District High School, where the principal is Terri Turner. Halls Creek has primarily an indigenous population and something like 95 per cent of the school population would be Aboriginal children. The quality of education being dispensed there was quite impressive. I also visited Wangkatjungka Remote Community School, where Edie Wright, the principal, is doing an incredible job with a dedicated bunch of staff in what can only be described as extremely difficult circumstances. Then we went to Fitzroy Crossing District High School, where the principal is John Bourke, and then on to the Looma District High School and through to the Derby District High School. I also had the opportunity to speak to children on the Kimberley School of the Air.

At all of those schools we delivered the message of the parliamentary system and the federal system of government, and the three levels of government in the lives of the population. I commend the efforts of the Parliamentary Education Office and the very fine work they did. The officers were Geoff Clarke, Camilla Blunden and Melinda Wise. I commend them for their great works and encourage them to continue in the future. (Time expired)
