Mr HOWARD (Prime Minister) (4:42 PM) —Mr Speaker, I wish to make a personal explanation.

Mr SPEAKER —Does the Prime Minister claim to have been misrepresented?

Mr HOWARD —Yes.

Mr SPEAKER —Please proceed.

Mr HOWARD —In the Australian today there is an article authored, I think, by John Ellicott, which refers to an announcement I made on Monday night that the Commonwealth government would make a matching contribution of $5 million to a private sector contribution of $10 million for medical research at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney. The body of the article contains the erroneous claim that I had made this announcement without discussing the matter with the Minister for Health and Aged Care. That claim is completely wrong. I had a personal discussion, probably of some 15 or 20 minutes, with the minister for health about the matter and there had been quite a bit of contact between our two offices. A simple inquiry by the journalist would have elicited that fact. The claim is quite wrong.
