Mr BEAZLEY —My question is to the Minister for Defence. Did the Prime Minister discuss with you the Howard doctrine of Australia playing a deputy role in our region in support of the United States's sheriff role before he outlined it to the Bulletin last week? Have you worked out the force structure, operational and budgetary details of this arrangement with the US Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Or do you agree with the Chief of the De fence Force, Admiral Barrie, who told Laurie Oakes yesterday that the Prime Minister's formulation was `a matter for him'? Are you going to sensibly ignore the Prime Minister's doctrine as well?

Mr MOORE (Defence) —I do not believe that the article displayed the probable thoughts of the Prime Minister.
