Mr BEAZLEY
—My question is addressed to the Minister for Aged Care. Are you aware that the letter to which you drew our attention—that which you passed on to the whip's office—was forwarded to the whip under the date 23 August 1999 and then transmitted by the whip to his colleagues on 24 August, the day after he received it from you? As you have botched this program, as I said before, will you now extend the deadline so that proper honour can be given to the senior citizens of this country? Mr Speaker, I seek leave to table the letter.
Leave granted.
Mrs BRONWYN BISHOP (Aged Care)
—As I said in my last answer, what I need, by next week, is the name of the individual, along with that of the person coming to Canberra with that individual. The reason I need that name is so we can make all the arrangements for plane travel and hotels so that they can be here on 30 September—
Mr O'Keefe
—Mr Speaker, I raise a point of order, again on relevance. Earlier, the minister stated that she had sent this information to people at the end of July. I have made it perfectly clear, along with every other member on this side, that what she is now saying is totally untrue. What are you going to do about it?
Mr SPEAKER
—The member for Burke will resume his seat. There is no point of order and I call the minister.
Mrs BRONWYN BISHOP
—I am saying that we need the name of the individual by next week in order to make arrangements for the dinner on 30 September, at which there will be a celebration and the announcement.
If individual members have difficulty in getting names to me and they contact me accordingly—as a number of folk have done—then we can mark down the places for them to be and you can let me know the times. The date of the function, of course, cannot be altered. The date of the function is the eve of the International Day for the International Year of Older Persons. So I would be pleased to have your nominations next week and for the opposition to get behind the program, as have the members of the government.
