Mr SLIPPER (6:49 PM) —I move:

(3) Schedule 1, page 10 (before line 3), before item 47, insert:

46B Paragraph 314AEA(1)(b)

Omit ", together with the details required by section 314AD".

46C Subsection 314AEA(5)

Omit ", 314AD".

46D Subsection 314AEA(5)

Omit "314AB(1)(a)", substitute "314AB(2)(a)".

[technical correction]

This is essentially a technical amendment, and I am quite certain that all of us on both sides in this place will be more than happy to see this technical amendment carried by the parliament. Government amendment No. 3 removes redundant references to section 316AD in section 314AEA. Section 316AD was repealed in July 1998 by the Electoral and Referendum Amendment Act 1998. It also amends the reference in subsection 314EAE(5) from 314AB(1)(a) to 314AB(2)(a). This corrects an oversight in the Electoral and Referendum Amendment Act 1998 that renumbered paragraph 314AB(1)(a) to 314AB(2)(a).

This bill will improve the level of accountability governing our electoral system, which in turn is a protection for democracy and our way of life. I commend the motion to the chamber. I present the supplementary explanatory memorandum and the further supplementary explanatory memorandum.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Motion (by Mr Slipper) agreed to:

That in the message returning the Bill to the Senate, the Senate be requested to reconsider the Bill in respect of amendment No. 3 made by the House of Representatives to Schedule 1.
