Mr LEE —My question without notice is addressed to the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs. Having already lost half his portfolio, will the minister give an undertaking to resign when he suffers the further humiliation of having his voluntary student legislation watered down or abandoned by his colleagues?

Dr Nelson —Mr Speaker, I have a point of order. I feel that perhaps the question should be considered to be out of order. It solicits a hypothetical response, amongst other things.

Mr SPEAKER —I agree that the question is close to being hypothetical. I share some of the member for Bradfield's concerns, but I am prepared to allow the minister to respond.

Dr KEMP (Education, Training and Youth Affairs; Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service) —The government policy on voluntary student unionism is an excellent policy. I just offer a small amount of gratuitous advice to the Leader of the Opposition, that when shadow ministers ask bizarre questions of that kind they cannot be long on the shadow frontbench.
