Mr JENKINS (12:59 PM) —In the 30 seconds that I have, I say to the honourable member for Herbert without too much rancour that the coalition went to the election with a plan. Even though they have formed government—and I acknowledge that they did win the election—that plan was rejected by over 50 per cent of the voters.

The concern is that not only has the plan been rejected by the majority of voters but we now have a new plan that Mr Reith is peddling around the place which the Australian public will be even further confused about. If we throw in any other plans that Treasurer Costello puts in place, or that Prime Minister Howard can inject into a preamble suggested for the Constitution, there will be even further confusion amongst the Australian electorate.

Main Committee adjourned at 1.00 p.m.
