Mr RUDD —On Saturday it was my pleasure to attend the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Mount Gravatt Little Athletics Club. It is the second oldest such club in Queensland and, as a member of Queensland Little Athletics, an organisation capably led by its president, Marjorie McNamara. It is responsible for 360 young people across the southern suburbs of Brisbane and provides a series of training and competitive opportunities for them.

Some of us in this place often despair about the decline of volunteerism in our community. This organisation demonstrates that volunteerism is alive and well. This has been the product of the efforts of many participants in the executive of this organisation—going back some 25 years. Previous presidents have included Bob Wilson, Derry Beavis, Barry Flowers, Greg Monaghan and Wayne Lake. Its current executive of Wayne Lake, Wendy Wilson and Lyndal Hemmings have kept up this fine tradition.

Little Athletics in Queensland and in the Mount Gravatt district provide an opportunity for young people to learn the skills of participation, team sport, sharing, personal striving and, above all, physical fitness and participation of families. Their activities and those of other organisations like Little Athletics deserve to be commended.
