Mr Campbell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 25 June 1998:

(1) Has his attention been drawn to television coverage of recent unrest in Indonesia showing a group of Indonesian soldiers armed with AUG Steyr rifles.

(2) Were the rifles supplied by Australia; if so, (a) were they made by the factory at Lithgow, NSW, (b) how many were supplied and (c) what sum did Indonesia pay for them.


Mr Downer (Foreign Affairs) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) I am aware that the Indonesian Armed Forces possess Steyr rifles.

(2) Australian-produced Steyr Mannlicher Rifles have not been sold to Indonesia.
