Mr MARTIN —My question is directed to the Minister for Sport and Tourism. Can the minister confirm that he received a letter from the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club of Victoria, located in the electorate of my friend the member for Jagajaga? What is the minister's response to their claims that a 10 per cent goods and services tax will increase the cost of participation in basketball for an average family by $170 per annum? Minister, is this the fair and equitable outcome you are seeking from your GST taxation proposals?

Ms Macklin —How will they get compensation?

Mr SPEAKER —When the member for Jagajaga is silent.

Mr ANDREW THOMSON (Sport and Tourism;Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Sydney 2000 Games) —The honourable gentleman will have to wait a little longer until the government's entire tax package is released. Let me simply say one thing about sport: one of the government's highest priorities in sport is to remove cheating through any measures we can take to combat the use of drugs. The same principle applies to the approach we take to the tax system. We want to eliminate tax cheats, and the biggest tax cheat this country has ever known is the Australian Labor Party for what you did in 1993.

Mr SPEAKER —When members of the Government are silent—I call the member for McEwen.

Honourable members interjecting

Mrs Bailey —I am trying to be heard, Mr Speaker.

Mr SPEAKER —I think that is a good idea. Can I have some silence in the House? The member for McEwen has the call.
