Dr WOOLDRIDGE (Health and Family Services) (1:03 PM) —by leave—I move government amendments Nos 1 and 2:

(1) Schedule 2, heading to the Schedule, page 71 (lines 1 to 3), omit the heading, substitute:

Schedule 2—Amendment of other Acts

(2) Schedule 2, page 74 (after line 14), at the end of the Schedule, add:

Hindmarsh Island Bridge Act 1997

20 Section 3 (definition of Heritage Protection Act )

Repeal the definition, substitute:

Heritage Protection Act means:

(a) until paragraph (b) applies—the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 ; and

(b) after the commencement of Schedule 1 to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1998 —that Act.

21 Subsection 4(1)

After "declaration", insert "or protection order".

I present a supplementary explanatory memorandum to the bill. In light of the High Court's recent decision upholding the validity of the Hindmarsh Island act, the government proposes these amendments to the 1998 bill. They are quite simple and straightforward. I don't want to steal the shadow minister's thunder, but I understand there was some confusion about circulating them to him in advance. I apologise to him, but I think he will still quite reasonably make his point.
