To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled:

The petition of the undersigned draws to the attention of the House of Representatives Indonesia's continued illegal occupation of East Timor and its refusal to grant the right of self-determination to the people of East Timor since its invasion of that country in 1975.

Your petitioners ask the House of Representatives to call on the Australian Government to rescind recognition of Indonesian sovereignty over East Timor, so that:

1. Australia's position will accord with the position of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

2. Australia will no longer be in violation of International Law.

3. Australia will be able to work productively towards self-determination for East Timor as required by the International Court of Justice.

4. Australia will take an important step towards helping resolve a situation of unremitting human rights abuses, dispossession and injustice.
