Mr EOIN CAMERON —In the year 2000 the Czech Republic will hold the fifth International Abilympics. Abilympics is the `Olympics of Abilities' and provides an opportunity to display the highly talented skills of people with disabilities. The fourth International Abilympics was held in 1995 in Perth, where Australia won 17 medals.

The Abilympics are important for a number of reasons: public awareness is increased and it is a display of the abilities of participants and their peers; the employment potential of participants and their integration into the community are enhanced; and the pride in representing Australia is also significant. While the Abilympics is focused on work skills, there are other important aspects to do with the conference, including the participation of keynote speakers from various countries to discuss current issues and policies impacting on people with disabilities.

The Abilympics Australia Association is now requiring funding, and I urge the government to give great consideration to its appeal for funds so Australians with disabilities can continue to participate in this important event and receive the positive recognition that they so truly deserve.
