To the Honourable the Speaker of the House of Representatives assembled in Parliament:

The petition of certain residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the fact that Nippon Meats owns abattoirs at Mackay and Merinda, one of which has been closed for more than six months and the other of which has been recently closed, leaving approximately 800 workers in the area without jobs.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to:

(1) Revoke export licenses for the Nippon Meat Abattoirs at Mackay and Merinda; and

(2) initiate a review of foreign investment guidelines in Australia to ensure that multi-national companies investing in Australia are bound by a code of conduct which protects the interests of all stakeholders, and not just overseas shareholders.
