(Question No. 1733)

Mr McClelland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 26 May 1997:

(1) Has there been an increase in the fees charged for a passport; if so, (a) what and (b) why.

Mr Downer —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) (a) Passport fees will increase on 1 July 1997 from $120 for an adult passport to $126.

(b) Passport fees cover the costs of passport and consular services. Since 1987, they have been adjusted annually at 1 July in accordance with movements in the CPI and part of the increase can be attributed to this. We are also expecting to see increased expenditure on technology improvements to increase the efficiency of passport issue. The passport fee increase should be seen in these contexts.
