Mr SERCOMBE(1.01 p.m.)
—I wish to pick up on the comments of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs (Mr Bruce Scott) about the moves in the budget to remove some anomalies. Obviously, I and other members of the opposition would welcome any move to remove anomalies, and I would appreciate some clarification from the minister. If he is unable to do it now, so be it; I would welcome it in writing in due course. Could he clarify the question of service pensions for RAN personnel serving in Malaya during the Emergency?
It is certainly my understanding of the budget that, in fact, that issue has not been resolved. Certainly, some of the other anomalies that the minister referred to are, I readily acknowledge, welcome. But the principal thrust of my comments is that, to the best of my knowledge, that particular RAN one has not been resolved to the satisfaction of the veteran community. If the minister is able to call me wrong now, I would be delighted to be called wrong, but it is certainly my very firm understanding that that glaring anomaly remains. It would be very useful to get the minister's comments—in due course, if not now—on what is being done to resolve it.
