To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives of the Australian Parliament assembled:
The petition of the citizens of Australia brings to the attention of the House the Federal Government's plan to make major cuts to Legal Aid funds.
The Federal Government plans to cut $40 million annually from Legal Aid funding.
Last year, 250,000 people were assisted nationally. However, if these cuts go ahead, many Australians will be denied access to a wide range of services, and only the well-off will be able to access the justice system.
The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the House of Representatives to call on the Federal Government to protect every Australian's right to equal access to the justice system by continuing to fund Legal Aid at its pre-election level.
