Mr Latham
asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 21 November 1996:
Further to his answers to questions Nos. 578 (Hansard , 18 November 1996, page 6997) and 633 (Hansard , 18 November 1996, page 6999), does his Department prepare estimates of the impact of major Budget measures on private savings; if so, are these estimates then considered in the formulation of the Government's national savings strategy.
Mr Costello
—The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:
No, the Department does not prepare estimates of the impact of individual Budget measures on private savings. As noted in Question No. 578, the effect on private saving of individual Budget measures cannot be estimated with any degree of accuracy because of the difficulty of separating out the effect of other influences on private saving.
